If you’re in the architecture, design, or housing industry – or you’re just a fan of these worlds – you may have heard of an exciting term gaining popularity over the last couple of years. The idea of “sintered stone” is something buzzed-about throughout all of these industries, with more and more places turning to this engaging and interesting style in order to provide a fascinating new look. But what exactly is a sintered stone- and how can you integrate it into your design? Let’s examine that here.
What is Sintering?
First, you should know that “sintering” isn’t really new – in fact, it’s very old. It’s a process used by crafts makers and artisans for years in order to make their creations. If you’ve ever picked up a ceramic toy at a store, then you’re familiar with the sintering process (on a much smaller scale, of course).
Sintering process consists of subjecting 100% natural raw materials to very high pressures and temperatures. The combination of raw materials goes through a press in a first phase where force/pressure of up to 400 bars is applied . In a second phase, the slabs are baked in an oven at a temperature of more than 1,200ºC. This way, the Sintering Technology gives the slabs physical and mechanical features unprecedented in the construction industry .
Why use Sintered Slabs?
The unique characteristics that come with sintered stone bring together all the advantages of the best materials used for slab composition. It’s highly stain and scratch-resistant, maintaining its brilliant look throughout all manner of everyday use. It’s also highly resistant to heat and fire, and incredibly waterproof. The dense, strong makeup of sintered slabs from its heat- and pressure-packed beginning make it a sturdy, durable material that’s ideal for all building applications. With modern processing technology, sintered slabs come in visually-appealing large formats that reduce the amount of grout joints needed – making the area more hygienic. Along with that, sintered slabs are relatively thin and lightweight, making for easier transportation, and installation.
The other key selling point when it comes to sintered slabs? It’s appearance. The flexible and creative nature of sintered slabs are highly customizable and dynamic. With sintered slabs, customers can order surfaces that look a great deal like other materials – like exotic marble , Natural Stone , Concrete , Rusted Iron and wood . . These customized panels can add a stirring flair to buildings with the desired look while retaining the remarkable resistance and durability powers of sintered slabs.
